Background to Visible Women
Germaine Greer famously wrote of women becoming
invisible once their sexuality diminished but it doesn't have to be
a time for negativity. The gift for women at age 50 is that
many finally get to know themselves, some for the first time in
their lives. After all the years of caring for children, cleaning up
other people's messes, arranging other people's lives, the
50-year-old woman faces herself and asks: Who am I? It can be a
moment of despair or enlightenment, or both. But it's a step in the
direction of wholeness, a step away from the need to please others.
The internet has played a large part in enabling us to access
opportunities that have not been available to previous generations. We are no longer confined to what is available
locally but have access to learning, challenges and experiences
on a global scale.
Visible
Women
is run by a team of women in their 50s working in partnership
with South
East Enterprise. We based
in Greenwich, London and have been designing and delivering
e-business training and business support for women for a number of
years. The idea for the site came from seeing so many women
empowered by their new found independence and the confidence that
came from learning new skills and building a successful online
business.
Purpose of the Site
We believe that as a group we
are under represented in the marketplace, where there is an emphasis
on youth or preparing for old age but very little for women of our
generation who feel young and don't want to be labelled as "the over
50s" or ready only to think about pensions.
There are so many opportunities on the Net, and we
aim to bring you a range of experiences,
challenges and information which will be updated regularly. The site
not only focuses on consumer products suitable for our
age group but has a responsible approach to our families and our
environment.
We plan to develop the
networking side of the site where we can exchange ideas and
experiences. Do please contribute - send us your feedback or ideas
how the site might develop.
